The best restaurants near C the View Guesthouse

I see myself as a proffesionel “:eater”. I know that word is grammaticly not correct, but I LOVE food. And I eat with all my senses. The food must be presented attractively, must look appetising, smell and taste good! Then value for money is very high on my list, and to top it off the total experience. Ambience, view, and most of all SERVICE! I get very upset if the service is terrible and will NEVER recommend that restaurant. Well here are a few of my favourites.

1) On the top of my list (A NOT TO BE MISSED EXPERIENCE WHEN IN THIS AREA) is: THE TRANS KAROO RESTAURANT:

  • Situated about 3 km from C the view guesthouse,  located in the old railway station of Great Brak River.  Overlooking the river mouth and Indian Ocean you can relax in this century old building while experiencing a culinary feast you won’t forget!  Chef Stefan Jamneck only uses the freshest ingredients available and likes to experiment with “blackboard menu’s” Their signature dish “The Trans Karoo” is a whole lambsneck slowly cooked for 4 hours in the oven. When you cut into the meat it falls of the bone. Succulant and mouth-watering! Then to accompany it sweet potato, mashed potato and some mixed veggies. But the presentation on the plate is truely artform!. My second choice is the Pork Belly if you are not in the mood for such a huge meal.  For dessert my favourite is the Lavender infused creme brulee! Hmmmmmm. Also their portions are quite generous, and you leave fealing so satisfied!!Nobody must miss this experience as quality is the keyword here and you can rest assured – everything is home made.  Beautiful wines from carefully selected vineyards are available as well as a fully licensed bar.Inspired by old fashioned cooking, Stefan Jamneck (owner and chef) adds a modern influence to the menu. It is his believe, “if it is not fresh, it is not served”. (MY TOP RECOMMENDATION)

Ok now we are moving a bit away from C the View Guesthouse for the seafood lovers! My number 2 recommendation:

2) THE KINGFISHER RESTAURANT.

  • Situated roughly 15-20km from C the View guesthouse is this VERY popular seafood restaurant.Situated at “The POINT” of Mosselbay the King Fisher Seafood Restaurant offers an unique seafood experience with unequaled ocean and beach views!  Enjoy a light snack or a full three course meal in this trendy setting. As I am allergic to shell fish I usually have the hake and rice and salad, but my favourite is a side dish or main course for vegetarians, is their baked vegetable bake. It is the best seasoned and baked vegetables with a tasty white sauce and cheese on top. It is fantastic!! Then they have a sushi chef that makes the best sushi I believe in town. Tasty and beautifully crafted. My husband then has the King’s platter with prawns, the best calamari ever served, mussels, different fish, chips, and rice.  So if you are a seafood lover then this restaurant is a must! Note: Eat seafood at this restaurant that is their speciality!!!!

.C the View Guesthouse….. a whale watcher’s paradise !!!!

I’d like to start this blog with a quote from Ernest Hemingway!!!

“I never knew of a morning in Africa
when I woke that I was not happy”

Ernest Hemingway

Is this not the truth??? Now to start a morning and watch the Southern right whale breach and spout water and

lobtailing, while having a 3 course breakfast is truely an experience NOT to be missed!

Whales tend to show of in the following manner:

  • Blowing: A sound made when expelling air through the blowhole. This is accompanied by a spout of condensed water vapour. This however is the normal breathing pattern of the animal.
  • Breaching: Leaping out of water in an arching back flip and falling back on their sides or back with a resounding slap. This is believed to be a way of communication, exercise or possibly to scratch the parasites off that live on whales. They can braech form 3 to 8 times in succesion.
  • Lobtailing: The slapping of flukes and tail on the water, causing a loud sound, appears to be a means of communication.
  • Spy hopping: The head and body are lifted vertically, as far as the flippers, above the surface. This enables them to see what is happening around them above water.

The animals, often just meters from the shore, provide unsurpassed whale watching opportunities between June and November

Now C the View Guesthouse is situated near Mosselbay between Little and Great Brak river, only 15 minutes drive from George Airport, right in the middle of The Whale Route.

This route starts along the south of Cape Town and extends to Durban, 1,200 plus miles of whale watching coastline. The route traverses several famous protected areas, including the Garden Route,Tsitsikamma National Park, and the Transkei.

At least 37 species of whales and dolphins can be found in the waters offSouth Africa.

However, the Route is most famous for encounters with southern right whales, humpback whales, and several coastal dolphin species. You can also see African penguins,Capefur seals, black oystercatcher birds and a variety of other marine life. The Southern Rights enter the placid water to bear their calves at  Gouritzmond, Vleesbaai, Dana Bay, Mossel Bay – especially on the St Blaize’s hiking trail, Hartenbos, Great Brak River, (THAT IS WHERE WE ARE AT!!!!)

Experience the thrill of viewing the giants of the deep close up, by taking a 3-hour boat based whale-watching trip.

There are estimated to be about 3 000 – 4 000 southern right whales at present, withSouth Africareceiving the major percentage visiting its coasts annually. Present populations of southern right whales are a fraction of estimated initial stocks.

South Africa retains its position as the fifth fastest growing whale- watching destination in the world

Now I know Hermanus is usually the first place you would think to go whale watching in South-Africa, but Mosselbay has made a LOT of tourist VERY happy to spot even MORE whales on their visit to us than at Hermanus. Also as Hermanus is so well known, the rates for accomodation is quite high in comparrison to ours!

We have fantastic long and short stay specials now during whale season. So please contact us at stay@ctheview.co.za for a quote. If you quote the following refenrence, you’ll get an additional 10% discount.

As reference use whale blog special.

Untill next time! Have a whale of time!!!

Fabulous golfing weekend!!!!

We just hosted the most amazing golfing weekend. On thursday a group of 8 guys form Strand and Stellenbosch area arrived after playing Mosselbay golfcourse (15 min from C the View Guesthouse). We treated them to a fabulous barbeque with “pap and sous”, barbeque sandwiches and salad! They enjoyed our beautiful view while having some deep conversations around the fire untill late in the night! The next day after spoiling them with a hearty breakfast, they were off to Pezula for day 2 of their golfing weekend. Pezula is about an hours drive from C the view guesthouse. They remarked when coming back that that course was the most difficult one by far! Another barbeque was ordered, and some tired golfers made it to bed earlier! Day 3 and Oubaai was waiting for them! A “Potjie” was next on the menu! The final night at C the View and the guys were celbrating a successful golfing weekend! The Jacuzzi was fully enjoyed as the men’s muscles were feeling that they played some tuff courses!!! Sunday morning we said goodbye, after a special breakfast, with a hint of sadness, as they were of the play one of the most scenic and beautiful golf courses, Pinnacle Point (just 15 min drive from C the View Guesthouse)! Another successful golfing trip came to an end! Boys hope to see you next year again!!! The C the View Family!

C the View goes “Walk with the Lions”

Hi to all! I finally went on this new thing here in Great Brak River, (close to Mosselbay), called Walk with the Lions…..At first I was a bit cautious, but when I saw them my breath was taken away by their AMAZING yellow eyes! It was the first time I was so close to a lion. They are still cubs as they are only 7 months old, but the size of their paws, as well as the authority they radaint, just made you aware this was a magnificent animal! I inderstand why they are “the King of the jungle”! It was a comfortable 1 hour walk with them, or as Eben the host told us, they must think they walk with us! He also said ther will be no tricks with the lions, as a lot of people overseas make the lions do tricks to get more tips, but Eben said that will not be the case at “Catwalk”. I can really recommend people to go and experience this at least once! As one guest remarked,”It was life changing”!

We at C the View guesthouse have started blogging!!
